I’ve been working on a new novel since August, and now that I’m past the first trimester of book writing, I feel like I can share the details.
The story is set in 2025-2026 and is about a trans woman who tries to divert some of the hundreds of millions of dollars being spent in the anti-trans grift economy to trans-related charities by starting her own transphobic conspiracy theory.
She makes it as preposterous as possible to stay in the fringes. Only the climate is so hostile that her conspiracy catches on, and she gets sucked into its own success.
The working title for the novel is “The Grift”. It’s a vehicle to explore being a “bad” trans person and dynamics within relationships and the queer community; moving forward with the incomplete resolutions that make up life and who deserves happiness. The protagonist is intended to be progressively more unlikeable while remaining understandable throughout.
I have the complete outline for the story, which currently sits at 10,000 words. It gives me a bird’s eye view of the plot, and once I’m satisfied with it, I’ll start writing the actual pages of the novel.
I’m also thinking this will be the last trans-centric work of fiction I’ll produce. I want to explore other avenues with future writing.
